Barack the Vote

on saturday, we were initiated into the local political scene in a big way at the democratic county convention. after hosting a preliminary "strategy" meeting earlier in the week with fellow obama delegates and alternates, our plans were rendered obsolete when the precincts were abruptly reorganized with new pairings. but, on the morning of the convention, both of us were elevated from alternate to delegate (with as much controversy as a hanging chad) and therefore had front-row seats and full credentials for all the proceedings. what was anticipated to take a couple of hours turned into an all-day marathon. for never having done much besides merely cast a vote in previous elections, it was fascinating, educational, and exhausting. it really is eye-opening what goes on behind the scenes of all the results you later hear reported on the news. we are just a drop in the texas bucket, but somehow it all feels significant and worthy of our participation. competing signs abounded, but despite dividing strongly along partisan lines, the overall atmosphere was one of unity and enthusiasm. people of all races, ages, and social status joined together in support of the democratic party in lubbock. we emerged weary, but with a sense of satisfaction.

Bumper Stickers

this week, the discussion generated by one of my favorite daily e-mails--fischtank's catch of the day--has centered around bumper stickers and what our messages mean to others. we happen to have one of those mentioned on wednesday. this particular sentiment got bumper space because in our experience, some of those who have been most disapproving and judgmental toward us are the same ones whose highest commandment is to love. which is a pretty sad commentary on christianity. but since we place ourselves in that camp, the task falls back on us to not to return the same judgment. so the bumper sticker ends up being a reminder to us as much as a pronouncement for others (who probably wouldn't recognize if it applied to them anyway).

Say Not the Struggle Nought Availeth

Say not the struggle nought availeth,
The labour and the wounds are in vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been, things remain.

If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke concealed,
Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back through creeks and inlets making
Comes, silent, flooding in, the main,

And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light,
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly,
But westward, look, the land is bright.

West Wind

the origin of zephyr's name comes from the greek god of the west wind, so he has that going for him when running the mile and a half track event. or at the very least, he definitely has less wind resistance than his competitors. for those of you non-trackies, that's six laps around...2400 agonizing meters. certainly not the way i'd choose to torture my body, so he gets high marks for undertaking it regardless of his time.

Camera Shy

kids are so funny. this little māori-man arrived at our easter brunch after church in his sunday best, with adorable face covered in tattoos that weren't as temporary as originally planned. ah, the moments a parent will always remember. he managed to overcome his feigned shyness long enough to expose his markings for the camera as well. hopefully he'll later look back at a photo like this with appreciation for the uninhibited expressions of his youth.

Happy Easter!

easter was not without its drama (has it ever been though?) our champagne brunch was filled with rain, tasty food, good conversation, confetti eggs, tears, new friendships begun, old ones renewed, surprise guests, kids' laughter...just about all you could ask to pack into several hours. not to mention the rest of the day. hope your easter had equal parts excitement and peace as well.

Passion for Pilgrimage

this book by alan jones is one of the best for the lenten season. "The Lenten Passion Story, with its attendant challenge to disciplined attention, is about our longing for freedom and our fear of it. It challenges me to look at my "addictions" and look at those parts of me that I dread most--my weaknesses and my failures....Lent is about getting ready for a banquet, about preparing for a wild party...Getting ourselves ready for this particular wild celebration demands our being willing to be probed by hard questions about the meaning of our longing. This particular party requires that we bring with us, especially our passion and our need." as lent draws to a close, we hope you are ready for a party on easter morning--ours if you are in lubbock, or your own.

Inch by Inch

"Unemployment is capitalism's way of getting you to plant a garden." ~Orson Scott Card

well, thankfully spring break is only temporary unemployment, but it still makes a great time to plant. after scavenging bricks throughout the winter, we had enough to create several raised beds in the alley at no cost. a bag of soil and a few seedlings later, we've got a good start on producing salad material for the summer. planting a garden is a simple way to help reduce your carbon footprint, so whether or not you are unemployed, give it a shot...

Fish on Fire

still going through trip photos from last weekend. after hearing anne lamott speak, we stopped at one of our favorite local dallas eateries for a late night bite, not realizing there was some kind of dance night in progress. too tired and hungry to go elsewhere, we just stayed and took in the surreal scene from our spot in the corner booth.

Architecture

today we put together a photo slide show of the buildings we photographed in dallas. we really enjoyed our foray into shooting architecture. the hardest part was timing our arrival to get the early morning or late evening sun just right. even though the landscape is still not green yet, the clouds did cooperate with us one morning to give the sky a cool effect without photoshopping. once we got used to the wide angle lens, we really liked it. the new perspectives you get can be fun and it sure is nice to be able to fit more of the subject into the frame sometimes. this type of photography has its own challenges, but one satisfying aspect is being able to mix it up by getting straightforward conventional shots and then throwing in some more artsy ones as well.

Anne Lamott

on our first evening in dallas, we had the fortune of attending the arts & letters live series to hear anne lamott speak. if you ever get that chance, do not pass it up. we have really enjoyed her books, but in person she is even more engaging. the best line of the night was "you know you've created God in your own image when He hates the same people you do." if you've never read any of her work, start with one of her books of essays...traveling mercies or her latest, grace (eventually).

13 March 2008

Dallas Bound

we should be viewing the dallas skyline by sundown :) we've been commissioned to take photographs of a couple of buildings in the metroplex area that were built by a local construction company. who knew there were so many different opportunities as a photographer? people don't seem to want to leave us to our portraits. any excuse to get out of town though. so we're armed with a new wide-angle lens and ready for a little work and a lot of fun. stay tuned...

Into the Wild

well...still no word from the repair shop on the salvage potential of my tea-soaked laptop. but after watching alexander supertramp renounce material possessions in "into the wild," i figure i can move on minus one piece of electronic equipment. the movie is worth watching, despite david denby's criticism in the new yorker review. not that the extremism portrayed was warranted, but you do have to question our society sometimes...like when faced with the glut of products in a grocery store isle or when trying to enjoy a beautiful moon-rise that is being obscured by technology. it gets a little depressing. on a more upbeat note, that second shot was taken on a previous visit to dallas--which is where we are headed this weekend. road trip!

Don't Drink and Hard Drive

blogging is temporarily on hold, as i stupidly spilled hot tea on my laptop and it has yet to come back to life. charming. no, i hadn't backed up recently. yes, i know better. and it wasn't even a glass of wine...geez.

Caucusing

not sure what other caucus events are like, since this was our first experience, but last night was basically like a block party sans food/drinks. people walking and biking to the neighborhood elementary school from all directions, volunteers handing out stickers along with instructions, and "give peace a chance" blaring on a boom box outside. we had no idea there were so many voters of like mind within one square mile, but we all had plenty of chance to get more acquainted while waiting over an hour for the polls to close, as the kids played wall ball and roamed the halls of their old turf. in this undercover shot, precinct captain doug earnestly pleads obama's case with us in the crowded cafeteria. amidst general confusion, everyone eventually split up by precinct number and candidate preference, then recorded their vote. we stayed long enough for the tally (slight edge for obama over clinton, mirroring the national scene) and to be elected alternate delegates to the county convention later this month.

Bus Stop Art

this weekend we took some more product photos, before the cold front blew in. one outdoor spot we used was a cool downtown bus stop bench. we've been having on ongoing discussion about whether a photo of a sculpture or figure can be art in and of itself or if it is at best just an interesting snapshot because the subject matter is already artistic. regardless, it was a fun place to shoot. we're still trying to work ourselves up to creating a post about what we would miss about lubbock. the 40 degree drop in temperature since yesterday hasn't done anything to help inspire us.

Obama

we are not all that politically oriented, but when pastor d showed up on the doorstep yesterday with obama signs, we agreed he could stake them in the yard. so i guess now no one has to ask who we voted for in the primaries or who we'll be caucusing for on tuesday. regardless of your political affiliation or whether you already went to church today, watch barack obama's sermon/speech at dr. martin luther king, jr's church in atlanta. it is worth a half hour of your time.
